Bio:
Rochdi Belgasmi is an awarded Tunisian dancer, choreographer, actor and researcher in dance esthetic from Sousse. He started dancing at the age of ten and later graduated from the Tunis Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts. He presently lives in Tunis and is considered the leader of post-revolutionary Tunisian popular dance.
He has been internationally acclaimed for having successfully broken the boundaries of popular dance, traditionally restricted to women and folkdance.
He puts great efforts in reminding his audience that Arab dance has an abundance of historical popular dances – at least 250 folkdances in Tunisia alone, constituting a forgotten heritage that Belgasmi brings up to date through his art. His shows offer a reflection of both traditional and modern Tunisia.
On the stage, his body becomes political, devoted to the retelling of this heritage. Through body language, he challenges prejudices and genders in order to engage into dialogue in a still conservative society.
Belgasmi is a dynamic and provocative artist, but above all, a free and committed man who uses his performances to spread a message of tolerance and freedom.
